Breast Implant Articles

Houston Cosmetic Surgeon's Breast Augmentation Articles

Being an informed patient is critical prior to any cosmetic surgical procedure, especially breast augmentation.  These articles were written to inform any patient interested in having a breast augmentation (breast implant) procedure.  Articles were also written about several options available regarding breast implants. I hope the information presented here will be helpful prior to your consultation with one of your Houston plastic surgeons.

Smooth or Textured Breast Implants? Anatomic versus Round Breast Implants? I’m Confused.

Breast Implants:  Textured vs. Smooth, Anatomic vs. Round  ~ Houston Cosmetic Surgeon

There are several implant options available, such as smooth, textured, round and anatomic breast implants. Breast implants have an outer silicone elastomer shell, which can be either smooth or textured.   Textured breast implants have a thicker outer shell and an uneven rough surface.  The textured breast implant has the advantage of a lower capsular contracture rate, but has the downside of “greater palpability.”  The smooth breast implant has “less palpability,” especially for thin patients.  The decision whether to have a textured or smooth walled implant is only applicable to round breast implants and is primarily based on minimizing the risk of capsular contracture after breast augmentation.

There are two shapes of breast implants:  round and anatomic.  The most commonly used breast implant is the round implant. Anatomic or contoured breast implants are teardrop-shaped implants that are intended to reflect a more natural shape than the more common round implants.   The disadvantage of an anatomical breast implant is the risk of malrotation in which the breast implant moves in a different direction, resulting in an uneven shape of the breast.   The decision between anatomic implants and round implants is determined by the shape and form of the existing breast. The anatomic breast implant may be ideal for patients with a deficient upper pole but may have the disadvantage of malrotation.  All anatomic breast implants are textured by design to minimize malrotation.

I recommend asking one of your Houston cosmetic surgeons for the different implant selections available.  Your plastic surgeon will guide you regarding which implant is best suited to your goals and body habitus.
